Hello everyone, last time we saw the “Rising stars” series which featured Stellasta ; the good news is the blog has started a new series titled “ The Student Extraordinaire” .

This series is very interesting and informative, it is basically about college students who are also entrepreneurs. It is very fresh and exciting because the persons who fall under this category are inspiring and optimistic. They are not just student but they have something innovative and extra going on aside their academics; they have an extra hustle which is paving ways for their future.

Olivia Sose’s Blog had an interview with Chioma Okwu the CEO of CHACHA’S MAKEOVER, who is a Student Extraordinaire in every sense. She believes in the use of talent and initiative to create wealth for oneself as a student. She is a lover of make up  and is very dedicated to her passion.
I hope you have as much fun reading the interview as much as I loved chatting with her:

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
My name is Chioma Okwu, I am a final year student of the rivers State University of science and technology. I’m studying banking and finance, I love make up, I love to wear make up as much as I love making a living out of it.

DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU’RE STUDYING IN SCHOOL?
I had no choice than to love it Hahahaha, because I never imagined myself studying that but you know how the educational system is in Nigeria, you choose a course but you get something else and you can’t reject it else you’d sit at home that year, so you learn to love what you have been offered and make the best out of it, which is what I am doing.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BRAND NAME “CHACHA’S MAKEOVER” ?
That is a long story. At first I was using Chioma’s touch which I didn’t really like because it seemed like a mouthful. I was searching for the right name when my logo designer suggested I used something playful that can be easily remembered even by children and so I came up with CHACHA’S makeover, although a lot of people think the “chacha” is for charity but it actually stands for Chioma.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A  PROFESSIONAL MAKE UP ARTIST?
For about two years now.

DID YOU HAVE A FORMAL MAKE UP TRAINING?
At first I didn’t, I watched a lot of YouTube channels and practiced  on myself and some friends but I knew there was something missing and I still had a lot to learn, so I did a brush up at three different places; I  trained at moannyallure, jojo’s touch, and ginerpecttouch. This was really expansive but I wanted to be adequately equipped for any job and I needed the knowledge.

image

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE INCOME YOU GET FROM YOUR WORK?
I’m not a full time makeup artist because of my education, so I don’t accept all jobs which reduces the rate at which I make money. But my income is really okay especially since I’m a student and I don’t have extra expenses to pay like shop rent and all.

image

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR EDUCATION AND YOUR BUSINESS?
My education and business are both important to me, so it’s really God’s grace and wisdom that I am able to balance both; sometimes I miss some classes for a job but I make sure my education doesn’t suffer due to my career, like through out February this year,i didn’t take  any job because I was preparing for my exams.  You just need God’s wisdom to be able to balance education and career.

image

DO YOU HAVE ANY ROLE MODELS IN THE INDUSTRY?
Yes I do, people like jojo’s touch, oshewabeauty, iposhlook, jideofstola, bmpro etc.

image

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MAKEUP BRAND?
I love black up and Mac, their foundation and powder is just superb.

image

WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER PLANS FOR AFTER SCHOOL?
I have lots of plans, first I want to open a make up studio which I know would be challanging because I have to choose the perfect location which can be really tricky espicially in Port Harcourt; I would also sell make up products because it’s impossible to assume my work would be paying for the rent and all especially if you get a top notch place. Then I intend to expand my brand, I want to produce my own foundation, powder, lashes etc; they would be very affordable but have a high quality, you know people love love stuffs with quality but want it to be cheap Hahahaha.

image

SO YOU DO NOT INTEND TO WORK IN THE INDUSTRY OF BANKING AND FINANCING AFTER SCHOOL?
I never intended to be a banker or anything like that, I want to really focus on my business and make it grow.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO BECOME ENTREPRENEURS LIKE YOURSELF.
You have to be passionate about whatever you want to do else you won’t be able to cope, you have to love it, which would make you persist and work hard towards your set goals. I also encourage them to start immediately, the right time is now. And remember whatever is worth doing is worth doing well, put your best into it but you must learn how to balance your education and career.

Thank you @oliviaSose for the interview

  3. @chachas makeover.
It’s so inspiring to see young entrepreneurs. Congratulations. But as an entrepreneur, what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt. What do you think you would have done differently five years ago if you had this knowledge. And how do you intend to use this knowledge to make your business grow.

  4. Thanks everyone for the comments I really appricate. @jfw_kings The most important thing I’ve learned is that there’s dignity in labour and if I knew 5 years ago what I know now,I would have started ChaCha’s makeovers then and by now who knows, I could have achieved alot and gotten to a certain height. The earlier you start the better for you.
