The last edition of student extraordinaire featured Chacha’s makeover and we saw it was possible to be a student and a successful entrepreneur. This edition of STUDENT EXTRAORDINAIRE presents Calistus Addo the C.E.O of CALI ADDO PHOGRAPHY.
Calistus Addo is a 200L student of political and administrative studies in the University of Port Harcourt. He is a photographer and a cinematographer but that hasn’t stopped him from fully participating in other socio-political activities as a student on campus, he is presently the D.O.S of his department and is a conscious supporter of the Aluta struggle and unionism in general. He loves politics and believes that passionate work and persistence leads to success. Below is the interview with Calistus Addo, read and be inspired.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOB AS A PHOTOGRAPHER.
Photography to me is life, it is the only language that can be understood anywhere in the world. My job empowers me, I am a shy person but whenever I’m holding a camera, I become a different person.
HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE INDUSTRY?
My cousin who is a graduate of Bowen is a photographer, during his NYSC in Anambra State, he would come to Port Harcourt for the holidays and that was how I got interested; although I have always loved visuals but I didn’t explore it until he came along. He showed me the basics and helped with some videos and materials.
WHEN DID YOU KICK START YOUR CAREER?
I got my first camera in January 15th ,2014. I had no experience but I took some shots that day.
WHAT KIND OF GEAR DO YOU USE IN YOUR JOB?
The regular stuffs like camera body, lens, tripod, filters, flash, etc.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE LENS, AND WHY?
Currently I prefer the prime lens. It creates a good depth of field and the aperture could reduce to 1.8.
HOW DO YOU EDUCATE YOURSELF TO BE BETTER AT YOUR JOB?
I read a lot of books on photography especially in pdf form, I watch video tutorials and I interact with other photographers too.
WHOSE WORKS HAS INFLUENCED YOU MOST?
Ty Bello, Olupitan Olusanya, Jide Odukoye, Kelechi Amadi Obi, 7th April photography and a lot of others.
AMONG YOUR WORKS WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND WHY?
My next picture is my favorite.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WISH YOU KNEW WHEN YOU STARTED TAKING PHOTOS?
I wish I knew how to take photos.
WHAT MAKES YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY UNIQUE?
I try not to make my images adhere to anyone’s rules, I like to keep an open mind.
DOES YOUR JOB DISTRACT YOU FROM YOUR STUDIES?
Sometimes, but my studies have distracted me more from my job.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS A STUDENT AND AN ENTREPRENEUR?
It’s not really easy but sometimes I ask the people I work with to take a job for me because I try to make sure I do not miss any class; and due to the hectic nature of my job, I do a lot of night reading.
HAVE YOU EVER TURNED DOWN A CLIENT.IF YES, WHY?
Yes, if I’m not comfortable with the offer or if it’s poor.
TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR SUCCESS?
Firstly, to God and my lovely mum, and then to my family at large.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR CAREER IN THE FUTURE?
it definitely would be bigger, I intend to start a media firm so just watch out.
IF YOU HAD ONE ADVICE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Starting a photography job is not easy, they need to be persistence; do some free jobs for exposure and give it your best, keep believing in God and they’d do exploits.
